For my project, I will be going to Cedar Middle School here in town and volunteering with the band program. Two days a week I'll be helping the students of the J.V, Concert and Symphonic Bands as well as the Percussion Ensemble. The students in the J.V and Concert Band’s go through a rotation, playing in an ensemble, working through an online music theory program and passing off songs with Smart Music. While I am at the middle school I go around checking on the student's working with Smart Music insuring that they are on task. Most importantly I take the time to work one on one with them helping them pass off songs. With the Symphonic Band I am given time to work exclusively with the clarinet section, as well as help those who need to pass of scales or other exercises.

 

I also will be given the opportunity to conduct a piece with the Concert and Symphonic Bands at their concerts. Working side by side with David Palmer and Alan Lee I will receive training that will help prepare me for student teaching as well as when I am teaching my own band program.

Working with the students at Cedar Middle School will help me be prepared to fulfil my goal of being a middle school music teacher. I am learning many different techniques and skills to teach in my courses here at SUU and when I go to CMS I have the opportunity to apply what I am learning. I love sharing my love of music with students and seeing the joy and accomplishment that they can find in it. Planning and beginning this project has and will give me more motivation to continue working hard to achieve my goals.
