Project Reflections
I’m very excited for this project, as I will be working and learning from two of the best middle school band directors in the state. Mr, Palmer received the Huntsman award last year, and Mr. Lee will be recognized by the UMEA (Utah Music Educators Association) this coming weekend. As I work with them, I will be receiving hands on experience, and be able to observe how to run a successful band program.
I know that it may be hard to dedicate so much time to this, as I will still be balancing my own school work, but there are many advantages. I will be able to apply what I am learning in the classroom now as a student immediately with other students. As I do this, I will be able to remember these skills and I will learn what works and does not work for my teaching style.
I also am excited for this hands on experience as it will help me be excited and remember why I am studying what I am. Sometimes life as a music major can get pretty busy, I find that I am constantly overwhelmed with all of my responsibilities and classes. But whenever I’ve been able to go and volunteer in the schools I find that I am recharged and excited for my future as a teacher. This project will be a constant reminder of the exciting things that lie in store for me.
This will also make me stand out from other applicants for future job opportunities. Having this experience will show that I am serious about music education and how dedicated I am to helping students find a love for music.
