Leading in the CMS Band Program
For my EDGE project, I went to Cedar Middle School and volunteered with their band program. I chose two days out of my week to dedicate three hours helping the students of the J.V., Concert and Symphonic Band's, as well as the Percussion Ensemble. During my time at the middle school I will assist the J.V. and Concert Band with their assignments in the online music program, Smart Music. As the students worked on this program, I went around to each student checking on their progress and ensuring that they were on task. During this time, I would give the students hints on how they could improve, and work out problems that they were facing in their playing. With the Symphonic Band, the higher-level students, I was given time to work exclusively with the clarinet and woodwind sections to help the students who required one-on-one assistance in their playing assignments. I also was given the opportunity to conduct several pieces in the Symphonic Band as well as the Concert Band and rehearse with the full ensemble.
Goals and Objectives
and teaching abilities. I will learn from two of the best Middle School band teachers in the state and obtain skills that will help me in the future.
Working with the students at Cedar Middle School helped me prepare myself to fulfil my goal of being a middle school music teacher. I applied the teaching techniques and skills I learned in my degree courses in the CMS band classroom. I loved sharing my love of music with the students and seeing the joy and accomplishment that they achieved. Planning and carrying out this project has given me more motivation to continue working hard to achieve my goals. I also strengthened my leadership and teaching abilities, as well as learn from two of the best Middle School band teachers in the state and obtain skills that will help me in my future.
As I complete this project, I will be prepared to teach my own class in the future. I will also be able to share my love of music with the students of Cedar Middle School. By completing this project, I am more prepared to teach my own class in the future. I also shared my love of music the students of Cedar Middle School.
I learned many important lessons while I worked with the students at the middle school. I could watch positive role models of good teaching and was able to model that during my time in front of the class as well as one-on-one. I feel more confident going into my student teaching and taking on more teaching responsibilities because of this project, and I know that I will be a more successful teacher as a result. The most rewarding thing for me however during my time at the middle school was the connections that I gained with the students. Seeing them excited about the music, as well as developing a bond with them through my teaching at the middle school. They would tell me that they were excited for me to come again, and to see what more we could accomplish.
